Beginning January 1, 2012, the Small Claims Court jurisdictional limit will increase from $7,500 to $10,000 for personal claims, other than bodily injury resulting from a car accident. For a claim of bodily injury resulting from a car accident, the increase to $10,000 will not occur until January 1, 2014.
It should be noted that the jurisdictional limit of the Small Claims Court for business related disputes and claims brought by a corporation shall remain at $5,000.

On July 8, 2011, Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 221 into law. SB 221 increases the Small Claims Court jurisdictional limit from $7,500 to $10,000 with two caveats.
